I completed my B.Tech in India where the medium of instruction was English. For an MSc in the UK, can I apply without IELTS by submitting a Medium of Instruction (MOI). Does the UK visa department still require it regardless of the university’s exemption?
Since you’ve completed your B.Tech in India with English as the Medium of Instruction (MOI), many UK universities do accept an MOI letter from your college/university in place of IELTS, especially if you can show that your entire degree was taught and assessed in English. This can sometimes exempt you from the English test requirement for admission.
However, when it comes to the UK visa, (Student Route / Tier 4), the decision is slightly different. If your university is listed as registered Sponsor (which most reputable UK universities are), and they have given you an unconditional offer based on MOI, the UKVI generally accepts the university’s confirmation without requiring IELTS separately. In other words, if the university has assessed your English and issued a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) stating you meet the English requirement, the visa department does not normally ask for IELTS again.
Some universities may still insist on IELTS or another UKVI-approved tests. So, the safest approach is to check directly with the specific university you’re applying to—if they confirm MOI is acceptable, then your visa process will not face any issues.
