For my MBA in Europe, some universities mention they accept Duolingo scores. But I’m confused – do embassies for visa purposes also accept Duolingo, or only IELTS/TOEFL? I don’t want problems later.
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is increasingly being accepted by universities in Europe for admission into MBA and other postgraduate programs, and countries like Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Ireland have several universities that recognize it. However, when it comes to the visa stage, the rules are not the same everywhere. For example, Ireland officially accepts Duolingo for study visas, so you won’t face any issue if your admission is based on DET. In the UK, while some universities do accept Duolingo for admission, so, if your university issues you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) based on your Duolingo score, then that is enough for your student visa, and you won’t need to take IELTS/TOEFL separately.
In other European countries like Germany or France, the visa is usually processed based on your admission letter, so if your university accepts Duolingo, that is generally sufficient, but rules can vary depending on the embassy. Our advice would be to confirm with both your target university and the respective embassy of the country where you plan to study.
