I scored overall 6.5 in IELTS, but only 5.5 in writing. Can I still get admission into universities in Uk for MSc in Business Analytics, or do they require a minimum band in each section?
For MSc in Business Analytics in the UK, most universities do not just look at the overall IELTS band, they also require a minimum band in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
Typical IELTS Requirement for master’s programme is overall: 6.5 or 7.0 (depending on the university) with each Band usually no less than 6.0 in each section
Since you have 5.5 in writing, here’s what it means:
Some universities may accept it but they might ask you to complete a pre-sessional English course before starting your degree.
Many universities will not accept 5.5 in writing especially for Business Analytics (a technical and report-heavy program), writing is considered crucial. Universities (like Warwick, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow) would require minimum 6.0 or 6.5 in writing.
Many universities accepts MOI and can waive off the English language requirement if you have done your Bachelors in English and you provide letter from the universities stating the same but again it depends on the university and its requirements.
You can opt to retake IELTS (only Writing focus). Since you already have 6.5 overall, improving Writing from 5.5 to 6.0 shouldn’t be too difficult with practice or opt for the Pre-sessional English courses in the UK, many universities (like University of Exeter, Brunel, Coventry, etc.) allow you to join a short English program before your MSc to meet the required standard.
